Certificate of Proficiency in Marine Engine Operation – Self-Study
Obtain your Certificate of Proficiency in Marine Engine Operation at Marstal Maritime Academy – study at your own pace and register for the examination when you are ready.
A Certificate of Proficiency in Marine Engine Operation (Duelighedsbevis i motorpasning) entitles the holder to operate engines on vessels with a propulsion power of up to 750 kW, within the applicable scope of the certificate.
At Marstal Maritime Academy, we offer a flexible examination programme that allows you to prepare through independent study before attending the written and practical examinations at the school.
This programme is particularly suitable for seafarers who wish to obtain the necessary qualifications in marine engine operation while studying at their own pace, without attending a traditional classroom-based course.
How Does It Work?
1. Registration and Access to Study Materials
Once you register, and payment for the course has been completed, you will receive access to Marstal Maritime Academy's digital learning platform, ItsLearning.
The platform provides relevant study materials and exercises to help you prepare for the examination.
Access to the learning platform is valid for 12 months from the date of registration. This gives you a full year to study the materials, complete exercises and prepare for the examination at your own pace.
You can study whenever and wherever it suits you, making it easy to combine your preparation with work and other commitments.
2. Self-Study – What Will You Learn?
The self-study programme covers the fundamental principles of marine diesel engines, their construction, operation and associated auxiliary systems, as well as relevant environmental regulations and electrical installations on board ships.
The study materials cover the following subjects:
Diesel Engines – Construction and Operation
-
Diesel engine components and construction (Diesel Engine Parts & Construction)
-
Two-stroke and four-stroke diesel engines (2-Stroke & 4-Stroke Engines)
-
Turbochargers and their operating principles
Fuel, Lubrication and Cooling Systems

Electrical Systems on Board Ships
-
Basic electrical circuits (Electrical Circuits)
-

The learning materials are designed for independent study, allowing you to work through each subject at your own pace and revisit the material whenever necessary during your 12-month access period.
3. Registration for the Examination
Marstal Maritime Academy regularly publishes available examination dates through our online registration system, NemTilmeld.
When you feel sufficiently prepared, you can select an available examination date and register.
You have 12 months of access to the learning platform to complete your preparation.
4. Written and Practical Examination
On the examination day, you must attend Marstal Maritime Academy in person.
The examination consists of two parts:
Written Examination
You must demonstrate your theoretical knowledge of marine engine operation and the subjects covered in the self-study programme.
Practical Examination
Once you have passed the written examination, you will proceed to the practical examination using one of the school's generators.
During this examination, you must demonstrate your practical skills and understanding of marine engine operation.
Both examinations can be taken in either English or Danish, according to your preference.
Requirements for Issuing the Certificate
Passing the examination alone is not sufficient to obtain the final Certificate of Proficiency in Marine Engine Operation.
In accordance with Danish Executive Order No. 900 of 19 June 2023, Sections 16 and 17, applicants must also provide documentation of the following:
1. Valid Medical Certificate
Applicants must hold a valid medical certificate for seafarers.
2. Approved Sea Service
Applicants must have completed at least three months of approved sea service in a qualifying capacity on a vessel with a propulsion power of not less than 100 kW.
Sea service must be documented through appropriate records, such as:
-
A Seaman's Book showing the required sea service.
-
A Sea Service Testimonial issued by a shipping company.
The required documentation must be submitted to Marstal Maritime Academy before the final certificate can be issued.
What If You Do Not Yet Meet the Sea Service Requirements?
You can still register for and complete the examination.
If you pass the examination but do not yet meet the requirements for approved sea service or a valid medical certificate, you will instead receive a Certificate of Examination Completion, confirming that you have successfully passed the examination.
Once you can provide documentation that all the necessary requirements have been fulfilled, your final Certificate of Proficiency in Marine Engine Operation can be issued.
This means that you can complete the examination now and obtain your final certificate once the remaining requirements have been met.
